What makes you beautiful???

WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL….

It is so very sad to me that anytime that I have attempted to search an image for “beautiful” on the internet it always leads to pictures of models or young women with perfect skin and the ideal body. Such images as these below appear:

These women are quite “beautiful”, there is no question about that! But how much professional makeup and hair products does it take to try and obtain this look? Not to mention the “photoshop” edits that have been used for each of these photos before they have been released.

My point is this….our daughters are growing up in a world believing that these above images are obtainable and pretty much a prerequisite to have in order to be told they are “beautiful”. This day and time there are filters that will apply makeup for you, shape your body, however, you may want it, enhance your breast, your butt, your lips, add freckles, take away moles or blemishes, etc…you get the point!

I have even seen online children as young as 8-13 years old giving makeup tutorials for crying out loud! We are raising our daughters to be “FAKE” and we are allowing them to change themselves digitally into whoever they think others will call beautiful. They even think they need 15 different makeup products and contour kits to look presentable

The sad part about this is that this does not only pertain to our daughters, it also applies to us MOMS as well…there I said it!

I will be the first one to raise my hand and say that I too am just as guilty as anyone. I have struggled with self-image and body image issues every since I was a little girl. For as long as I remember I have been on a “diet”. In high school, I would eat an apple a day, take laxatives, and work out like crazy. I could even go a few days without eating and then “binge” eat because I was literally starving! It never seemed like enough for me though, I did not have the body that any of my friends had and I tried everything in my power to obtain what was impossible just to be what my mind believed was “beautiful”.  Even in my mind, beauty was what everyone else saw on the outside. I would spend hours on makeup every morning, and even more, hours tanning each week because we all know that our skin looks better with a tan…right? Or so I thought then…

DID YOU KNOW????

At least 30 million people of all ages suffer from an eating disorder in the U.S. Every 62 minutes at least one person dies as a result of an eating disorder. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. (All statistics found on the ANAD eating disorder website, anad.org)

THIS IS FACTS!!!! This terrible mental disorder is claiming so many lives! It saddens me so very much and my heart just breaks because I truly want every girl/woman to know how beautiful they are! We have got to get ahold of ourselves and our daughters! We have to teach them where true beauty comes from and like I said, I am right there with all of you.

SO HOW DO WE TEACH THEM THAT THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL??

First, we need to be honest with ourselves and vulnerable with our daughters. We all need to be open and honest about our issues. Let’s face it, our daughters know by the comments that we make about ourselves, how we truly feel about ourselves. If we own up to our imperfectness, that will show our daughters that we also struggle daily and that together we can change how we think about the word “beautiful”.  Also by being vulnerable your relationship will grow much stronger 🙂

Secondly, you share with them what God says about “beauty”….

1 SAMUEL 16:7-THE LORD DOES NOT LOOK AT WHAT MAN LOOKS AT. MAN LOOKS AT OUTWARD APPEARANCE, BUT THE LORD LOOKS AT THE HEART.

GENESIS 1:27- SO GOD CREATED MANKIND IN HIS OWN IMAGE, IN THE IMAGE OF GOD HE CREATED THEM; MALE AND FEMALE HE CREATED THEM

PSALM 139:14 I PRAISE YOU BECAUSE I AM FEARFULLY AND WONDERFULLY MADE; YOUR WORKS ARE WONDERFUL, I KNOW THAT FULL WELL.

So I am telling you that “WHAT IT MEANS TO BE BEAUTIFUL” is to have a beautiful heart! Nothing in a person’s outward appearance impresses God. God looks upon your inner beauty. God created you in his perfect image and he does not MAKE MISTAKES! You are beautiful!!

We have to realize that our beauty is not measured by what we look like on the outside and we need to be focused on our inward beauty. Let’s teach our daughters to be kind, be funny, love others, be compassionate and show them how to shine their light to a dark world.

TOGETHER WE CAN CHANGE HOW OUR DAUGHTERS VIEW “BEAUTY” AND EVEN CHANGE OUR OWN POINT OF VIEW IN THE PROCESS.
